Hospital Manager, Gary
BAppSc (VT), VTS (Exotic Companion Animal)
Gary graduated from the University of Queensland in 2006 with a Bachelor of Applied Science in Veterinary Technology and is a Registered Veterinary Technologist in Australia. His career began in private practice across small animal, mixed, and avian and exotic medicine, before returning to UQ as an Industry Fellow to teach exotic animal medicine and nursing to undergraduate students.
Gary has spent much of his career in teaching and leadership roles within the UQ Veterinary Teaching Hospitals, while also supporting the Avian and Exotic Specialist Service. He played a key role in integrating exotic animal medicine into the veterinary and vet tech curriculum, ensuring students gain hands-on exposure to these species throughout their degrees.
In 2022, Gary became a Veterinary Technician Specialist (Exotic Companion Animals). He has presented internationally, written textbook chapters, and published articles in the exotic animal field. He has also been heavily involved in professional leadership through volunteer roles within professional associations, advocating for veterinary nurses and technologists around professional recognition, career pathways, and specialties.
Clinically, Gary’s interests include exotic animal anaesthesia and analgesia, reptile medicine (including venomous species), and ornamental fish. Through his education work, he aims to help veterinary professionals at all levels feel more confident and capable when working with exotic companion pets.
Hobbies and Interests
In Gary’s spare time he loves taking his kids fishing and kayaking.
Owned Pets
At home, Gary’s family share their lives with a lively mix of animals. A dog, two cats, two horses, a sulphur-crested cockatoo named Mooncake, plus a collection of reptiles and freshwater fish. There’s never a dull moment this house!
